Lord of the Rings Online - Official Website. In recent years we've seen a huge shift in the MMO genre with plenty of big name games going from a paid subscription or buy out right experience to completely free to play.

This list of games includes Rift that has one of the more interesting mechanics I've seen used successfully in recent years of the genre. You can start playing Rift through their official website or through Steam which means you'll get all the benefits of the Steam friend windows so I usually recommend people go through Steam. So what makes Rift unique? Mostly the dynamic battles that can happen anywhere in the world at any time.

These battles are initiated by rifts opening up in the game world which happen at random. These areas lead to creatures of other elemental planes spewing forth and charging towards a particular objective be it a town, particular hunting ground or another location. If left to their own devices you'll find that these areas quickly became unsafe to travel through alone.

As such players are encouraged to band together to deal with these threats with alerts being sent out and all players becoming part of a universal party that joins the area, meaning it's easy to get healed up by a friendly healer and get your share of the spoils.

Many of my days in Rift were spent focusing solely on hunting Rifts with others and closing them up which was a nice change from the usual pacing of these sorts of games.

With a good number of awards under its belt for the year that it was released I'm definitely not alone for my love of this game and can't recommend it enough as a now free alternative to WoW.

If you find the dull graphics and boring fantasy storylines of other MMORPGs leave a lot to be desired then you're the intended audience for Age of Conan, one of the paid games like World of Warcraft that is now completely free to play. The games graphics are simply as good as it gets and while that does mean you'll be spending a lot of your monthly data to download the game it's well worth it it was 25GB last time I checked.

Age of Conan isn't just about looking pretty it's also got a very mature storyline that is designed for the people that have been playing MMORPGs since before they can remember. While it's fantasy orientated it's a different and much darker spin on the usual adventure, something I really welcomed.

Combat is also much better and more than just button mashing your way to victory. Your position and timing of your character skills play an extremely important role in each battle so you won't be able to zone out while you play like you might do with other games.

To tie all these unique features together you've got a very powerful soundtrack and good character customisation behind it, sometimes you feel more like you're in a single player RPG like Gothic than a MMO. Aion commands a following well into the millions and is mostly known for its skill chain and PvPvE battles. For those seeking high quality and something different Aion has obvious appeal and is one that you shouldn't be missing. Skill chains require some skills to be performed as part of a chain, in that they require a certain move to be performed first and allows careful players to develop more powerful attacks by taking into account the skills and chains they have available.

While the PvPvE system takes place on massive battlefields with fortresses that can be claimed by players and then battled over with the assistance of NPC characters. Aion also offers a good mount system to make travel easier and eleven main classes that each bring their own style to gameplay. It's definitely one of the high quality options featured on this page. Aion - Official Website. Sometimes you just need a good massively multiplayer online role playing game that you can play within your browser.

For me I've always found Sherwood Dungeon to be one of the better options, in particular because you don't even have to register to play with the option to start playing instantly as a guest. This makes it great for a game that you need to kill some time but don't necessarily want to commit to long term although in the case of Sherwood Dungeon I would.

It's proven handy a number of times where I had to keep one of my teenagers busy but only had a laptop and didn't want to spend 5 minutes signing them up for a game like they would have the patience for that.

All because it's browser based though doesn't mean it's some trimmed down version of the big MMOs it actually does a very good job of including everything you need and the graphics are some of the better in the browser based genre as well. I'm also constantly surprised by the changes to the game, every other month there seems to be a boost in graphics and content to ensure both new and old players are having fun.

For browser based games like World of Warcraft I can't recommend Sherwood Dungeon enough and with it's guest account option you could literally be playing the game within 10 seconds of visiting the website so why wait. New here fellow Australian so hello, and good article- Cheers. I very much appreciate your review of these games. Unfortunately, the only game available to me -- from this list -- outside of WoW is Sherwood Dungeon. This game is remedial at best.

It has very limited options as a browser based game. I don't believe it will hold my interest very long. I'm on a Mac. System requirements for every other game listed require some iteration of Windows. WoW, remarkably, has a very stable game client for the Mac most of the time. I have played WoW since , but have tired of the pricing; the realignments of character specs; changes to the lore; rude players, etc.

Thanks for your post! I have been looking for any game like WoW, I'm tired of paying for playing. I have heard pretty great things about Rift though I haven't played it yet. If I ever take a break from my WoW sub again it might be worth a shot! Other product and company names shown may be trademarks of their respective owners.

Perfect World If group based MMO experiences appeal to you then Perfect World should be up the top of your list when it comes to options that are currently available.

Runes of Magic Runes of Magic has been a leader in the free to play MMORPG scene for a long time, it sold me very early on after it released in and I still play it from time to time to this day.

You will be provided with a residence and a basic housekeeper. You can choose to upgrade your residence as well as the housekeeper by either paying for it or using your own skills. While most of the things are free in this game, some things, such as upgrading the housekeeper, can only be accomplished by paying for it.

Fighting monsters is hella fun here. Apart from the fun factor, the other incentive to go one to one with them are Monster cards. Some monsters drop cards once they are slain.

These cards would provide you attribute bonuses while also serving as a trophy for slaying monsters. I for one love collecting them. The pet system is really unique as well. You need to use traps to obtain a pet. They will also assist you in combat depending upon how loyal they are to you. The in game currency system is Diamond that can be accrued through in game shops by using real money. You need to be careful though as these shops are the real money suckers.

In some cases, you will be rewarded with Rubies for buying Diamonds. These rubies can also be used for in-game transactions. You can also gift your Diamonds and Rubies to other players if you want. I could go on in the similar manner trying to pen as much as possible about every unique feature of Runes Of Magic.

I will curtail it right here. All in all, Runes of Magic is a pretty well-crafted game which is certainly going to exceed your expectations. World of Warcraft is subscription based game, but most of the games I have included in this list as WOW alternatives are free to play. Well, if you want a game similar to World Of Warcraft in terms of the business model, Rift should be your best bet.

You will encounter several types of raids and dungeon quests most of which will need you to play with your friends. You can be a lone wolf if you want to, but Rift is designed to play with others. One you churn through the initial content, you can participate in hour-long raids. These end game raids are going to test your combat skills for sure. That's where the real fun lies! Tera seems to have the answers to all your questions.

With more than 80 zones and approximately thousand quests to offer, it certainly going to keep you busy for a while. Besides an intriguing combat system, the gorgeous graphics and an intelligent enemy AI is going to take you by surprise as well. Unlike in other MMOs, the monsters are not going to swing blindly. They will fall back, strategize and will strike when you least expect them to.

You are going to die more often compared to other MMORPGs, but it will be you who'd have the last laugh as you are going to learn from mistakes and come back stronger than ever! Again, there are not a lot of subscription based game left these days, so you'd have to put up with free-to-lay model even if you loathe it. There are 3 types of quests in Aion — Work Orders, campaign quests and ordinary quests.

Campaign quests are the main quests that can be completed by you only. These quests can't be shared with others or abandoned as they are necessary for your story progression. Apart from campaign quests, other types of quests are quite similar to WoW.

So if you are looking to play some games like World of Warcraft, Aion should be right up in your alley. There have been a lot of epic games, movies and novels set in fictional world of The Lord of The Rings.

This MMO is not going to disappoint you either. Featuring a rich lore, tons of action packed quests and a gigantic world to explore, LOTO should be right up your alley if you are looking for games like World of Warcraft.

Developed and published by Turbine, Lords Of The Rings was originally planned to be launched and run as a subscription based game, but they switched to free-to-play model with an option to subscribe soon thereafter. You can get a good chunk of this game for free, but you'll have to pay to access the rest of the content locked behind the subscription door.

Subscription is also necessary to enjoy the frequently-released expansion packs. On top of that, it will also remove the currency cap and allow you to travel anywhere with ease. Its unique combat and difficulty level is also worth pointing out. The seven tiered system determines how difficult or easy your fight is going to be. Depending on your level and health, a particular NPC may or may not be a threat to you. In a non-technical term, this system ensures that there won't be much repetition in fight.

The PVP system is quite unique as well. Again, you'll need to subscribe to this game to enjoy most of what PVP has to offer. All in all, if you are looking to play a lore-rich game and don't mind paying monthly subscription fees for a game, you should definitely get your hands on LOTRO. What makes this game stand out from other countless MMOs in the market, is a rich and believable world with a lot of meaningful, mind-bending quests.

You will start off the journey by choosing between Dragon, Illuminati and Templar — the three factions available in this game. Initially designed to be a subscription based game, they switched to Buy-to-Play model pretty soon. Unlike most of the free-to-play MMOs, it features a more believable world with breath-taking graphics which is almost on par with single player games. What's surprising is, most of the quests of Age Of Conan actually make sense.

It has been designed with adult gamers in mind, so expect a lot of nudity and blood while you make your way to the top. A lot of raids and areas still remain exclusive to premium players which is a big turn off. I hope they will change it as soon as possible. So if you are looking for some free games like World of Warcraft, Age of Conan should be your best bet, at least until you get to level Those two choices will determine the role you will take in the game.

You will level up and develop your skills as your complete quests, participate in raids and PVP battles. With a vibrant community that consists of millions of people from all across the world, it seems pretty unlikely that they will pull the plug anytime soon.

The game takes place in the fictional world of Tyria with your role as the savior of this region. You can perform quests alone, with your friends or with NPCs. Guild Wars also has a subtle professions and skills system. While there are a good number of professions for you to take on, the core professions are Monk, Ranger, Mesmer, Necromancer, Warrior and Elemenmtalist. On top of that, there are more than a thousand skills to learn for you.

However, you can carry only 8 skills with you at any given point of time, so you will have to change your skill set depending upon the scenario. A careful section of skills is required before you advance into raids or other battles. Runescape is the very first game I ever played.

It was a trend to play Runescape back in those days when we just brought our first ever PC. More than 14 years have passed, but Runescape is still loved by millions of people. Despite being a browser MMORPG, it still boasts amazing graphics with a lot of quests to take on, dragons to slay my favorite! You, as a player, will set your own quests and goals. You can choose to fight an NPC, complete a ton of quests or invest your time in enhancing your skills.

With 26 skills to master in Runescape, it is definitely going to take some time before you can learn all or most of them. Using a skill frequently will gain you some experience points which will get you closer to mastering it. They will affect your gameplay quite significantly. You can travel through the huge world by foot or by using magic spells. Charter ships are also available, but they are harder to obtain. The map is pretty huge divided between different kingdoms and cities with each region offering different type of quests.

You will never run out of things to do here as they still release content frequently. You can still pay a monthly subscription of the game if you want to. Subscribing to this game will get you the VIP status with so many perks and privileges. Similarly, becoming a premium member requires you to pay for micro-transactions at least once. What sets this game apart from most of the MMOs is the real-time combat mechanics which is really fun.

You can choose to play in first person or third person mode depending on what you prefer. I personally prefer the first person mode as you feel more immersed in the game in this mode. Third person mode, on the other hand, is something I seldom switch over to. Your quests taking options are determined by your level, length and difficulty of quests.

If you are above the base level of a particular quest, you are going to get less reward and XP for completing that quest. You can still, however, join the party and do the quest together with others. You also need to make sure that your character is not more than 3 levels below the highest level characters in your group; otherwise you are not going to receive much XP after doing a particular mission together. They ditched the subscription model in favor of a much more popular free-to-play model back in January, Since then, the game has seen a surge is number of players by quite a significant margin.

If you have watched the Star Trek TV shows, you will instantly relate to this game as it features several subtle references to the TV storyline. The game starts out with you having to choose from one of the three factions available in this game - Federation; Klingon, and Romulan.

Your journey in Star Trek universe begins soon after that. You will need to gather enough data and knowledge about an item before you can craft them. While it's really difficult and puzzling to master, here is a sense of adventure and fun in gathering data for crafting your favorite items. Last but not the least, there is a foundry system which allows you to create missions and share them with others, so that you can try what others have created and vice versa.

You will always find a lot of user-created missions on the in-game board. It's actually surprising to see how productive some of these gamers can be if given the right tools and chance to create something. Some of the user created missions can be really amazing! Don't worry; you won't need to read Star Trek novels or watch TV shows to get into this game.

How would you rate World of Warcraft out of 5 stars?
